I’m thinking about getting a compact refrigerator for my room but I’m not sure what type of maintenance it may need.

The compressor type are just scaled down versions of full sized refrigerators. Just keep it clean and defrost it when the freezer compartment builds up a little bit of ice. I have one made by Sanyo that is over 20 years old and still going strong.
The thermoelectric cooler type don’t get as cold and the fans go after a few years.
